Meeting needs in poor communities
It was against this background that local community church leaders James and Julie Kato felt called to start the Master’s Kids School which opened in February 2008, operating within their Church building. The initial school could be described as similar to a kinder-garden utilising benches as desks and with no chairs. Despite the lack of equipment and resources the free school began to straight away provide basic education and a simple meal each day for children aged 3 – 5 years.
Such was the lack of free education in the area that some children aged 11 and 12 came to the school and were allowed to attend. Julie Kato was herself a qualified teacher and has led the school from the outset with her vision to deliver high quality education to children in Nateete to allow them to break out of the cycle of poverty.
